This painting began at a bar in New Orleans during a costumed live figure drawing session, post Mardi Gras. The technique originates from studies with the collective El Quinto Piso in Mexico City. The work is also informed by an apprenticeship with José 'Pepe' Barbosa of the collective Grupo Suma. Some of the paints are made by hand, mixing eggs, honey, and minerals. The signature red comes from Grana Cochinilla, a beetle that lives on the nopal cactus, a crimson coveted since the 2nd century BC.
