This piece is among the first works from a new collection, Gente en Nueva York. The series carries forward an idea I became deeply interested in while living in Mexico: the way post-Revolutionary Mexican artists elevated campesinos, laborers, and everyday people to subjects worthy of the same attention historically reserved for wealth and power. Gente en Nueva York brings that idea into the city I call home now. A campesino sits on a Brooklyn stoop, bookended by agaves, smoking and sipping from a copita. A figure rooted in one place and reimagined within another. A reminder of how much beautiful Mexicano tradition and culture lives all around us here in New York.
